Optimal Sensors Location Using Modal Assurance Criterion in Modal Identification of Concrete Gravity Dams

نویسنده

چکیده مقاله:

Determination of the optimal sensors location in order to identify of modal parameters, especially in large structures such as dams, is one of the practical issues, which is widely used in damage detection and structural health monitoring. The main objective of this study is to obtain the most information from the dynamic response in a concrete gravity dam by minimizing the non-diagonal elements of Modal Assurance Criterion matrix. For this purpose, by selecting the Bluestone dam, a finite element model is constructed for modal analysis of system; then, the effective modes of vibration are determined by means of modal mass participation rates. Afterward, by defining three scenarios for the position of sensors on dam’s body, among the candidate points, the best places are obtained based on the independency of mode shapes. The results of the analysis show that height of optimal location of sensors, having a fixed sensor on the crest, are almost identical in various scenarios. Overall, considering the practical limitations such as: lack of access to some parts of structures and economic constraints (restrictions on the number of sensors), the results can be effectively used in instrumenting of concrete gravity dams.

Mass Properties Identification of a Rigid Body Using Modal Analysis

In performing vibration analysis of the car engine on the engine support, it is necessary to know the mass properties of the engine including mass, position of the center of mass and mass inertia moments. Because the car engine has a relatively complex geometric shape and is composed of different components with different densities, determining its mass properties faces many challenges. There a...

Un-Weighted And Weighted Versions Of The Modal Assurance Criterion (MAC) For Evaluation Of Modal Vector Contamination

Modal vectors frequently have small amounts of contamination or distortion from random errors or bias errors, particularly when compared to results from modeling where normal modal vectors are the common result since damping is not included in the model. In order to understand, and possibly eliminate the contamination, tools are needed to evaluate the contamination. While the traditional modal ...

Adaptive Multi-modal Sensors

Compressing real-time input through bandwidth constrained connections has been studied within robotics, wireless sensor networks, and image processing. When there are bandwidth constraints on realtime input the amount of information to be transferred will always be greater than the amount that can be transferred per unit of time. We propose a system that utilizes a local diffusion process and a...

The Identification of the Modal Parameters of Orbital Machines using Dynamic Structural Approach

The researcher measured the least number of frequency response functions required for the identification of modal parameters, in order to simplify the identification of modal properties of such systems. In this work, the orbital machines are supposed to be a combination of orbital and non-orbital components. Structural Approach specified the identification of dynamic properties only to those ph...

DAMAGE IDENTIFICATION BY USING MODAL EXPANSION AND TOPOLOGY OPTIMIZATION IN THREE DIMENSIONAL ELASTICITY PROBLEMS

In this paper, topology optimization is utilized for damage detection in three dimensional elasticity problems. In addition, two mode expansion techniques are used to derive unknown modal data from measured data identified by installed sensors. Damages in the model are assumed as reduction of mass and stiffness in the discretized finite elements. The Solid Isotropic Material with Penalization (...
